Kraków
Saint Stanislaus's city: the royal cathedral on Wawel, Veit Stoss's altarpiece at Saint Mary's, Saint Faustina's tomb and the Divine Mercy basilica at Łagiewniki, and the Kraków of Saint John Paul II
Kraków is the city of Saint Stanislaus, the bishop killed at Skałka in 1079, whose shrine is in Wawel Cathedral, where Polish kings were crowned and buried. Many religious orders opened their first Polish houses here, and Saint Mary's on the Main Square holds Veit Stoss's carved altarpiece. In the twentieth century the city gave the Church two saints. Saint Faustina Kowalska lived and died in the convent at Łagiewniki, where the Chapel of Saint Joseph holds her tomb and the Divine Mercy basilica stands beside it. Karol Wojtyła studied, worked, was ordained and served as archbishop here before he became Pope John Paul II, and the Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II stands on the ground of the factory where he worked. The Old Town has Holy Trinity, the first Dominican house in Poland, and the Papal Window, from which he spoke to the crowds. Mass in English is celebrated on Sundays at 10:30 at Our Lady of the Snows on Mikołajska Street and at 12:00 in the chapel at Łagiewniki.

Kościuszko Mound and the Salwator hill
The mound, raised between 1820 and 1823, gives the highest easy view over the city and, in clear weather, toward the Tatra mountains. The walk up from Zwierzyniec passes the chapel of Blessed Bronisława, on the hill named for her. Entry to the mound is paid on most days, so check the opening hours before you go.

There is also an English Mass on Sundays and feasts at 12:00 in the chapel at Łagiewniki (Dominican English Mass page and misericordia.eu, checked on 30 October 2026). No other regular English Mass could be confirmed. At Łagiewniki, confession in English is heard every day from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 16:30. At Holy Trinity it is available only in the hours when an English-speaking friar is on the Dominican rota, so check the rota online.

At Łagiewniki, see the Divine Mercy basilica, the Chapel of Saint Joseph with Saint Faustina's tomb and the Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II. Then add Skałka, the Franciscan basilica, Holy Trinity and the Papal Window. The Old Town sites can be walked in a day. Łagiewniki needs an afternoon so that you are there for the Hour of Mercy at 15:00.
Article · 3 minThe Catholic Sites to Plan Around in KrakówReadThe Hour of Mercy is prayed every day at 15:00 in the chapel and the basilica (misericordia.eu, checked on 30 October 2026). Tram 8, the usual route, has been suspended since 5 October 2026 until further notice (MPK notice, read on 30 October 2026), so check a transport planner on the day. Do not squeeze Łagiewniki into a morning.

Article · 3 minSaint Mary's Basilica: The Altarpiece, the Hejnał and How to VisitReadAuschwitz-Birkenau is the site of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp where about 1.1 million people were murdered, most of them Jews. Entry to the grounds is free, but every visitor needs a named pass booked online at visit.auschwitz.org, since passes have not been sold at the Memorial since 1 March 2026. Guided tours of about 3.5 hours sell out well ahead, and the Memorial advises booking a guide two months ahead (auschwitz.org, checked on 30 October 2026). Arrive 30 minutes early, and keep bags within 35 by 25 by 15 cm. The Memorial does not recommend visiting for children under 14.
Article · 7 minVisiting Auschwitz and Birkenau From KrakówReadThe Tourist Route runs from 8:00 to 18:00, takes 2 to 3 hours, goes 135 m deep and has more than 800 steps. The chapel of Saint Kinga lies on the route. On 30 October 2026 the mine's site showed English tickets at 143 zł, or 121 zł reduced, and Polish tickets at 103 zł, or 82 zł reduced; only online booking guarantees a time. Article · 5 minWieliczka Salt Mine and Saint Kinga's ChapelReadWadowice, John Paul II's hometown, is about 1 hour 15 minutes west of Kraków, and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, the Passion and Marian sanctuary he knew from boyhood, lies about 50 minutes southwest, so the two make one long day. From 1 November the Family Home museum on Kościelna Street is open 9:00 to 16:00 every day except Tuesday, when it opens at 12:00, and a ticket costs 34 zł, or 27 zł reduced (domjp2.pl, checked on 30 October 2026). The museum is closed on 1 November and on the last Tuesday of every month.
Article · 6 minWadowice and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska From KrakówReadGive Kraków three nights for a first pilgrimage: two full days in the city, one for Wawel and the Old Town and one for Łagiewniki and the John Paul II sites, plus a day trip. Four or five nights add Auschwitz, Wadowice and Kalwaria. Auschwitz should not share a day with Wawel. A pilgrimage across Poland is better with four or five nights in Kraków.
Article · 7 minHow Many Days Do You Need in Kraków?ReadTake the train from Kraków Lotnisko to Kraków Główny, which takes under 20 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes by day (Koleje Małopolskie, checked on 30 October 2026). Catholic houses take guests. In the Old Town these are the Franciscan guest rooms by the basilica and the Bernardines' Dom Świętego Szymona at the foot of Wawel. At Łagiewniki there are the House of Saint Faustina, the Pastoral House and the Pilgrim House of the Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II. Tyniec Abbey has a guest house too. Each house sets its own booking rules, so book through its own site.
Article · 6 minWhere to Stay in KrakówReadKraków is an easy city for visitors, and the usual precautions apply. Watch for pickpockets in crowds and on trams. Use a taxi app or agree the fare before you get in. Avoid street exchange offices, and decline the offer to pay in your home currency at ATMs, which gives a poor rate. The emergency number is 112.
Article · 5 minIs Kraków Safe? Common Scams and Honest AdviceReadCover your shoulders and back at Wawel Cathedral, which asks this in its regulations, and dress modestly in every church. Keep quiet during services and stay out of the area reserved for prayer at Saint Mary's. The traditional greeting in a church is Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus, meaning Praised be Jesus Christ, and the answer is Na wieki wieków, meaning Forever and ever.

Kraków has real Catholic lodging, much of it in the monasteries and at the sanctuaries themselves. In the Old Town the Franciscans reopened their guest rooms by the basilica on 1 July 2024, and the Bernardines run the Dom Świętego Szymona, Saint Simon's House, at the foot of Wawel. At Łagiewniki the House of Saint Faustina is run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and takes no check-in after 20:00. The Pastoral House of the Divine Mercy Sanctuary has a reception open 24 hours, and the Pilgrim House of the Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II takes written bookings only. The Benedictines of Tyniec keep a guest house where Vespers is sung in Latin chant. We read each house's own site on 23 September 2026, so confirm prices and rules on franciszkanska.pl, domszymona.pl, domsiostryfaustyny.pl, hotel.misericordia.eu, sjanpawel2.pl or domgosci.benedyktyni.com before you book.
